Microsoft’s Azure Fuels Record $92.3 Billion Quarter as Cloud and AI Lead Growth

Azure cloud-shaped data center with servers and AI nodes

Microsoft reported a landmark quarter, posting $92.3 billion in revenue for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027. The company’s cloud and AI investments — particularly Azure — drove the surge, offsetting weaker performance in Windows and Xbox. Operating income rose 21% to $45.9 billion, and net income jumped 32% to $36.6 billion, with Microsoft noting that investments in OpenAI affected the headline figure.

Quarterly highlights

Azure emerged as the standout performer, with Microsoft revealing Azure’s standalone quarterly revenue for the first time: $33.2 billion, up 48% year-over-year. Microsoft Cloud revenue, which includes Azure and Microsoft 365 commercial cloud among other services, reached $63.9 billion, a 30% increase. The newly reported Agents and Infra segment brought in $76.8 billion, growing 25%. Microsoft’s commercial remaining performance obligation — contracted revenue yet to be recognized — climbed 73% to $677 billion.

Azure and cloud momentum

Azure’s nearly 50% growth underscores the company’s ongoing shift toward cloud and AI services. Microsoft’s revised reporting structure, which now separates its business into Agents and Infra and Devices and Consumer, provided clearer visibility into cloud revenue and highlighted how central Azure has become to Microsoft’s topline. Management indicated that demand for AI infrastructure remains strong and is outpacing available capacity.

Segment overhaul and financial details

Alongside the revenue records, Microsoft disclosed elevated capital spending to support cloud expansion. Capital expenditures for the quarter reached $45.2 billion as the company added 24 new data centers across five continents. Microsoft expects capital expenditures to exceed $50 billion in the next quarter. Excluding the effects of its OpenAI investments, Microsoft reported adjusted net income of $36.4 billion.

Pressure on Windows and Xbox

Not all businesses fared well. Windows OEM revenue declined sharply — Microsoft cited a 27% drop in Windows OEM revenue — and the combined Windows OEM and devices line fell to $3.6 billion, down 22%. Xbox revenue slipped as well: overall Xbox revenue was $5.4 billion, down 2%, with Xbox content and services revenue declining 2% amid lower third‑party content and Game Pass contributions partially offset by strength in first‑party titles.

Quarterly product breakdown

– Azure: $33.2 billion, up 48% – Microsoft 365 cloud: $27.8 billion, up 17% – Productivity and server licensing: $8.4 billion, down 3% – Search and advertising: $6.6 billion, up 10% – Xbox: $5.4 billion, down 2% – Industry solutions: $5.3 billion, up 9% – Windows OEM and devices: $3.6 billion, down 22%

Capital intensity and outlook

Microsoft emphasized heavy spending to keep pace with AI-driven demand for datacenter capacity. Having expanded its global footprint with 24 new data centers, the company signaled continued investment, projecting capex above $50 billion next quarter. Management also forecasted accelerating Azure revenue growth to roughly 49%–50% and provided guidance for the second quarter of FY27: total revenue between $96 billion and $97.1 billion, which would set another quarterly record if achieved.

What this means going forward

The quarter reinforces Microsoft’s position as a leader in cloud and enterprise AI infrastructure, with Azure now clearly visible as a major standalone revenue contributor. At the same time, legacy businesses tied to PCs and gaming showed signs of strain, highlighting a split between the company’s high-growth cloud segments and cyclical consumer hardware and content lines. Continued heavy capital spending suggests Microsoft is betting on further demand for AI infrastructure to sustain future growth.
