Windows 11 backup restore summary improves device migration

Microsoft has added a Restore Summary to Windows 11 26H2, and it is meant to improve visibility for backup and restore tasks during device migration. The feature is part of the latest preview update and Microsoft has shared guidance on how it works.

Windows 11 26H2 and its rollout

At the end of last month, Microsoft confirmed that Windows 11 26H2 was rolling out to all supported PCs, including Windows 10 devices. The same rollout also offered the ISO route for people who do not want to do an in-place upgrade, along with the latest accompanying security definitions.

Microsoft also said the update brings performance gains from optimizations and new features such as improved Modern Standby and hibernation. Those improvements are described as especially useful for mobile devices like notebooks and laptops. The Restore Summary feature was added through the latest preview update KB5127936 and others.

How Restore Summary works

The new Restore Summary option sits inside Windows settings backup and restore. It helps preserve user settings and Microsoft Store app configurations when a device moves through transitions such as OS upgrades. Microsoft says the backup and restore settings can be controlled by admins through Intune, Policy CSP, or Group Policy modifications.

The summary appears after a backup profile is restored to a new device. It gives a clear view of what was restored successfully, including Windows settings and the list of Microsoft Store apps. Microsoft says this improves transparency during device transitions and helps administrators check restore results and continue setup on the new device with confidence.
