Amazon has made Uber Eats the restaurant delivery partner for Prime members in the United States. The new arrangement ends Amazon’s existing deal with Grubhub, while Prime members who had already activated Grubhub+ can keep using that membership through December 31, 2027.
Prime food orders move to Uber Eats
Under the partnership announced Thursday, Prime members can order food from Uber Eats through Amazon.com and the Amazon Shopping app. They do not need an Uber account, and they will not pay a delivery fee on orders over $25, according to the companies. Amazon said it continuously evaluates third-party offers, and it said it saw an opportunity to provide a better restaurant delivery experience.
The change also closes off the Amazon.com and shopping app route that Prime members used for Grubhub orders. A Grubhub spokesperson confirmed that the agreement is ending. The commercial agreement that gave Prime members access to Grubhub+ expires Thursday, Amazon said.
A longer Amazon-Uber tie-up
The new deal adds another piece to the existing relationship between Amazon and Uber. Their current agreements already cover cloud computing, Zoox robotaxis, and the integration of Uber Eats into Amazon’s AI-powered Alexa+ assistant. Amazon and Uber are also offering Prime members $20 off their first two orders of $25 or more during the first two weeks.
Amazon first reached an agreement with Grubhub in 2022, giving Prime members a free Grubhub+ subscription. Two years later, Amazon expanded that arrangement and made the free Grubhub+ membership an ongoing benefit for Prime members. Amazon also reached a deal with Grubhub’s then-owner, Just Eat Takeaway.com, that could lift its equity stake in the food delivery company to as much as 18%.
That performance-based agreement was set to renew annually, and Amazon could receive warrants for an additional stake in Grubhub. Just months later, Just Eat Takeaway said it planned to sell Grubhub to Wonder. According to Just Eat Takeway’s annual report, Amazon chose in December 2024 to cash out its outstanding exercisable warrants. Amazon and Grubhub’s commercial partnership continued until now.
