Bloomberg reported the new funding on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The outlet said the $11 billion is part of a larger round that has not closed yet. A source told Bloomberg that the round is expected to close in the coming weeks and could reach about $20 billion. In late September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was looking to raise $30 billion in the upcoming round, so the current figures are well below that target.
IPO plans and market pressure
OpenAI had previously said it would go public this year, but it later delayed those plans. Expectations remain that the company will conduct an IPO next year at some point. TechCrunch said it had reached out to OpenAI for comment and would update the story if it responds.
The report also appeared hours after Bloomberg said buyers of shares in Anthropic’s planned IPO were looking at a much lower valuation than Anthropic had targeted. Bloomberg wrote that some potential buyers thought Anthropic could be valued at as little as $1.1 trillion, compared with the $2 trillion investors were said to be expecting roughly a month ago.
